Manners not Mayhem - Puppy Training near Bath

Puppy Training Classes Somerset

Today, 26th of July 2019, we welcomed a group of young dogs to our new puppy training class in Somerset. Despite being focused on Pet Gundog Training, for these puppy classes we welcome any breed of dog may it be a Gundog breed or any other. There is no difference, any young dog needs to learn the basics and how to fit in with the rest of the family on a daily basis. We often read about ‘puppy socialisation’, yes we do need to make our youngsters familiar with the everyday challenges of traffic, children, bicycles, joggers, wheelbarrows, cars you name it. What we don’t need is mayhem and bullying of weaker puppies by the more stronger characters. You may wonder and ask yourselves if these behaviour patterns would already show at such a young age and yes they do already show up amongst litter mates.

Putting boundaries in place can’t start early enough if you would like to own a happy puppy and later relaxed, and self controlled dog.

When you train your puppy keep it short and simple, a few minutes at one time on several occasions per day are much better than extended periods where the young dog may just lack attention. We started our training course today with manifesting the sit command. Teaching the sit is probably the most important exercise to get in place. Once the little dog understands what sit means we can start and combine it with other short sequences like walking along and suddenly commanding the sit. Vary your training as much as you can. Start in the house, move to the garden and finally make the exercise part of your daily walk in different places. This varied patterns ensures your puppy becomes comfortable to obey in different circumstances. Speaking of obeying, make sure your young dog does. Discipline yourselves to say commands only once, otherwise they will loose their meaning. Insist the dog does what is required. Persevere but be patient. Dogs don’t speak our language. Dogs learn by repetition and conditioning.

Be relaxed, don’t put any pressure on training the dog. The animal will pick up on your mood. Keep it fun but stay strong. Lower yourselves to the level the dog understands yet don’t try to elevate the dog onto human standard. They do not speak our language.

Amongst our little puppy group we have a Jack Russel, a Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel and Wire-haired Vizla. All lovely little dogs and I am looking forward to teach them and their owners over the next 6 weeks. Our puppy training is based on the award winning book ‘Manners not Mayhem’ by Lez Graham. Lez recently won the 2019 International Book Award in the category Animal Pet General.

Please register your interest at any time should you be interested to enrol on our dog training programs. Our classes are small and will not be attended by more than 6 to 8 dogs at one time. Town and Country Dog Training is located in the beautiful Somerset countryside within easy reach of Bath, Bristol, Frome, Bruton and the rest of the Southwest.

Town and Country Dog Training focuses on supporting you to develop your pet gundog into a well-trained and good-mannered companion you can be proud of wherever you go; may it be out in the countryside or in the middle of a town.
