Gundog Training

At Town and Country Dog Training we offer a structured sequence of pet gundog training classes starting with a basic beginner course all the way to advanced level. We take you to the point where you would like to be and it is entirely up to you how far you would like to progress. All classes are open to any gundog breed from pure bred Labrador, Flat-coated and Golden Retrievers to non-pedigree gundog crossbreeds such as Springadors and Labradoodle.

All training courses are accredited and if you would like to take part at the end of a course, there is a final assessment. Our course structure is based on The Pet Gundog series of books by Lez Graham, MA.

Private One to One Lessons

Town and Country Dog Training One-to-One lessons are tailored to suit you and your dogs’ requirements. If you are unable to attend group classes or prefer a more personal tuition, a one to one lesson will be more beneficial and can address an issue easier than a class environment.

If you come to us with a particular issue, focus or problem such as recall or dummy delivery, training sessions can be arranged to match your needs. We start with an assessment and after each class will set you homework to achieve your goals. You only move onto the next level once you have reached the current goal. One-to-One lessons are suitable for all dog breeds including Spaniels, Retrievers and any other pet gundog.

Puppy Training

Here at Town and Country Dog Training we love puppies. Young dogs are a blank canvas and are eager to explore and learn; training them should be fun. We will teach you to be confident in your approach settling your little ball of fluff into its new home and giving it the best start in life. Our training covers all the basics including being confident around other dogs, focusing on and walking with you, recall, sit, leave and down. If required we can include crate and toilet training, feeding and handling at the vet. All our puppy training lessons are held outdoors.

Town and Country Dog Training Puppy classes will not include more than 6 handlers and puppies at one time. Please make sure your puppy has all the necessary vaccinations before you sign up for our puppy training.

Companion Dog Training - Trained for life courses

Many pet gundogs are simply companions but they will still need certain life skills and be well mannered to make life for both owner and dog enjoyable. Town and Country Dog Training classes for companion dogs include the teaching of basic obedience such as loose lead walking, recall, not to jump up, stay, leave but also play (a skill that not always comes naturally).

We also include handling – very useful if your dog goes to a groomer or the vet. Our companion dog training would be a natural progression from puppy training should you decide not to go down the route of pet gundog lessons.

The Pet Gundog & The Accredited Pet Gundog Instructors

When Lez Graham established The Pet Gundog in 2007 it changed the way of training gundog breeds. Her methods are based on building a trusted relationship with your dog, and to learn to communicate and train your companion with common sense. As a result, you will have developed a well-mannered, relaxed dog you can be proud of and that you can take wherever you go – on a walk, to a competition or the shooting field.

I am proud to be part of the officially recognised group of Accredited Pet Gundog Instructors - With our qualification and years of practical experience, we aim to pass on our knowledge to train new and existing dog lovers.

Our Training Grounds

We are lucky to own our own training grounds in the beautiful Somerset countryside. The undulating landscape offers opportunities for all abilities.

Levelled field areas for puppies, young dogs and Beginner Gundog classes, hillsides and woodland areas for more advanced levels including a variety of obstacles, jumps and natural boundaries like hedges and areas of longer grass. Our location is within easy reach of the city of Bath, and the surrounding areas of West Wiltshire , Warminster, Frome, Bruton, Castle Cary, Wells and south of Bristol.
